Scientific background: NR5A1 (Nuclear Receptor Subfamily 5, Group A, Member 1), also known as SF1 or FTZ1, is a member of the nuclear receptor family of intracellular transcription factors and is encoded by the NR5A1 gene. By linkage analysis using interspecific backcross mice, Swift and Ashworth (1995) mapped the Nr5a1 gene to mouse chromosome 2. Shen et al. (1994) proposed that SF1 regulates MIS in vivo and participates directly in the process of mammalian sex determination. SF-1 is a critical regulator of reproduction, regulating the transcription of key genes involved in sexual development and reproduction. Its targets include genes at every level of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, as well as many genes involved in gonadal and adrenal steroidogenesis.
