In vivo, proteins and peptides are made according to the information transcribed from DNA and translated by ribosomes from the RNA. Each gene in a cell’s DNA codes for a single protein. Commercial sources for proteins and peptides include humans, poultry (eggs), rodents, goats, bacteria, viruses, yeast, plants and insects.
Synthetic peptides can be created in the laboratory by building a chain one amino acid at a time, with attached protecting groups preventing unwanted side chain reactions as the peptide grows. Or, longer peptides can made by coupling peptide fragments.
Thousands of different proteins and peptides are available commercially, each one targeted to a specific organism (e.g. human). Proteins and peptides come in several different isoforms, such as IgA, IgG, IgM, etc.
Proteins and peptides are used in basic microbiology and genetic research, drug development, cancer treatment and clinical testing.
