Primary protein: Collagen alpha-1(?) chain; Collagen alpha-3(IV) chain; Collagen alpha-4(IV) chain; Collagen alpha-5(IV) chain; Collagen alpha-6(IV) chain
Scientific background: Collagen IV is comprised of a third chain (alpha-3) together with the 2 classical ones, alpha-1 and alpha-2. COL4A3 gene is localized to 2q36-q37 by analysis of somatic cell hybrids and by in situ hybridization. The alpha-3 chain of type IV collagen induces autoimmune Goodpasture syndrome. Mutations in the COL4A4 and COL4A3 genes cause familial benign hematuria.
