Ceratotoxin-2. A potent blocker of central nervous system voltage-gated Na+ channel.
Ceratotoxin-2 was originally isolated from the Ceratogyrus cornuatus (Ceratogyrus marshalli, Staighthorned baboon tarantula) venom.
Ceratotoxin-2 modulates different voltage-gated Na+ channel subtypes from the central nervous system (Nav1.1-Nav1.5 and Nav1.8) by shifting the voltage dependence of channel activation to more depolarized potentials and by blocking the inward component of the Na+ current. It is significantly more potent against Nav1.2 channel than the other Nav channel subtypes.
