Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1) binds to metalloproteinases such as collagenases and irreversibly inactivates the proteases. TIMP-1 is known to bind to MMP-1, -2, -3, -7, -8, -9, -10, -11, -12, -13, and -16, but not MMP-14.
