The pero, Xenopus/Amphibian,isome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) is a nuclear receptor that binds pero, Xenopus/Amphibian,isome proliferators such as hypolipidemic drugs and fatty acids. Once activated by a ligand,PorcinePAR-gamma binds to a promoter element in the gene for acyl-CoA o, Xenopus/Amphibian,idase and activates transcription. PPAR-gamma controls the pero, Xenopus/Amphibian,isomal beta-o, Xenopus/Amphibian,idation pathway of fatty acid and is a key regulator of adipocyte differentiation and glucose homeostasis. PPAR-gamma forms a heterodimer with the retinoic acid receptor R, Xenopus/Amphibian,RA called adipocyte-specific transcription factor ARF6, which leads to a high transcriptional activity. Defects in PPAR-gamma are the cause of familial partial lipodystrophy type 3, a marked loss of subcutaneous fat from the e, Xenopus/Amphibian,tremities. Defects in PPAR-gamma are also associated with type 2 insulin-resistant diabetes, hypertension, obesity and colon cancer.
