Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of at least 20 structurally related, zinc-containing enzymes that have the ability to breakdown connective tissue. MMP-1 is also known as collagenase, fibroblast collagenase, and interstitial collagenase. MMP-1 has shown substrate specificity to collagens I, II, III, VII. VIII and X, aggrecan, versican, tenascin, casein, gelatin, alpha1-antitrypsin, myelin basic protein, L-selectin, pro-TNF, IL-1beta, pro-MMP-2 and pro-MMP-9 directly and indirectly by activating other MMPs.1-15
