Monensin A (Monensin) is a polyether ionophore antibiotics isolated from Streptomyces cinnamonensis, and is perhaps the most representative drug of this group. Monensin is able to transport cations, specifically Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Ag+ and Tl, across lipid membranes of cells,Porcinelaying an important role as a Na+/H+ antiporter. Monesin blocks intracellular protein transport, and e, Xenopus/Amphibian,hibits antibiotic, antimalarial, and other biological activities. The antibacterial properties of monensin and its derivatives are attributable to their ability to transport metal cations through cellular and subcellular membranes.
