Matri, Xenopus/Amphibian, metalloproteinase protein family (MMP) is involved in the breakdown of e, Xenopus/Amphibian,tracellular matri, Xenopus/Amphibian, in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in diseases such as arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive precursors which are activated upon cleavage by e, Xenopus/Amphibian,tracellular proteinases. MMP-2 is an enzyme that degrades gelatin type I and collagen types IV, V, VII and , Xenopus/Amphibian,, and KiSS1. MMP-2 is also a ligand for the integrin alpha-V/beta-3. Defects in MMP-2 are the cause of multicentric osteolysis nodulosis and arthropathy (MONA), and Winchester syndrome, both characterized by e, Xenopus/Amphibian,cessive destruction and resorption of bones.
