LP-PLA2 is an enzyme which circulates in the blood, and attaches to LDL cholesterol particles in the bloodstream. These particles can adhere to the arterial walls, where oxidation takes place which promotes the build-up of plaque in the arteries. Lp-PLA2 is considered currently considered a risk marker for cardiovascular disease and is measured through a simple blood test using ELISA.
