The RAB6KIFL gene spans approximately 8.5 kb of genomic DNA and contains 19 exons. The composite cDNA encodes a deduced 890-amino acid protein that contains a motor domain and an ATP catalytic domain, hallmarks of kinesin-like proteins, in the N terminus. The protein shares 87% sequence identity with the mouse Rab6kifl protein. In contrast to the ubiquitous expression of the mouse protein, expression of the human, approximately 3.4-kb RAB6KIFL transcript appears to be tissue specific. Northern blot analysis detected high expression in fetal tissues and in adult thymus, bone marrow, and testis, and low expression in heart, placenta, and spleen. No expression was detected in brain, lung, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas, or peripheral leukocytes.
