The glutamate receptor 2, a homo- or heter0teramer, is an Ionotropic glutamate receptor. L-glutamate acts as an e, Xenopus/Amphibian,citatory neurotransmitter at many synapses in the central nervous system. Binding of the e, Xenopus/Amphibian,citatory neurotransmitter L-glutamate induces a conformation change, leading to the opening of the cation channel, and thereby converts the chemical signal to an electrical impulse. The glutamate receptor then desensitizes rapidly and enters a transient inactive state, characterized by the presence of bound agonist. Ser880 has been identified as a PKC phosphorylation site within the C-terminal region of GluR2 and has been shown to differentially regulate the interaction of the PDZ domain-containing proteins GRIP1 and PICK 1.
